I'm Starved!
Today's Scripture: Proverbs 27:7
Central Thought: Be careful what you fill up on when you're hungry.
When I'm very hungry, I can identify with Esau when he sold his birthright to Jacob for lentil stew. I want to satisfy that yearning with anything I find that's edible. It doesn't matter that it's almost dinner time. I want it now!
When I fill up on junk food, I start lose interest in healthy meals. Watching television or doing anything that seems to fill the emptiness inside can dull my spiritual and emotional appetite. The more I watch TV, the less energy I have to exercise, study my Bible, or spend time with family. My spiritual hunger is being fed junk and I start losing the desire to take in what will truly satisfy my hunger.
A dietician once told me to eat five small meals a day. When I did that, I really never got hungry or binged. As I ate healthy snacks, my weight started coming down and I had more energy. Spiritually, the more often I read God's word and pray, the less apt I am to be restless or feel empty.
A balanced eating program brings health and energy. A spiritually and emotionally balanced lifestyle helps me grow and keeps me from desiring junk. I am satisfied to dine on what's good for me, for I am never starved.
Devotional Prayer: Lord, help me desire the good things You provide, so I am never starved for things that are wrong.
